The Salad Fairy
I went out to do a few errands yesterday morning, and when I came home I saw that the Salad Fairy had left a bag of salad at the door! This is the first "real" sign of spring! It means that my neighbors' gardens are all starting to grow the wonderful varieties of produce that we see here each year.
And, it's not just the local gardens. I've now had several batches of early strawberries, including the wonderful Garriguette variety. You look at them and think, "They can't be ripe," because instead of being bright red, they're more a kind of pale, orangey red. But when you bite into one, it bursts with amazing, full-blown, strawberry flavor. They're more expensive, but the taste make them worth it.
We've also had some excellent organic cherry tomatoes. They have so much flavor that you feel like eating them until you make yourself sick!
Like everywhere else, you can buy a lot of these things off-season. But one thing I've learned over the years, and which remains true here, is that JM's grandfather was right: Before the time, it's not yet time and after the time, it's no longer the time. It applies to fresh produce as well as most other things in life.
Ciao for now.
