Hospital bills and Blogger problems
I've been feeling a bit frustrated with writing these entries lately, as the Blogger website seems to have been acting weird. I would spend time writing an entry, then not be able to post it. By the time I could, it didn't seem relevent any longer. I can post on my Yahoo 360 site, and will switch to that if the problems here continue. However, it doesn't look as nice and the current archives would disappear...
At any rate, I've been meaning to post for some time about the EOB (explanation of benefits) that I received following my little migraine procedure back in April.
As you may remember, I took the medical taxi to the clinic in Toulouse and stayed in the outpatient surgical center for a good part of the day. My procedure was carried out in the surgical suite and I went to the post-op recovery room for about an hour afterwards.
The first thing I received was a recap of the cost of the taxi service. Keeping in mind that we're about 60 miles from Toulouse and that the taxi had to not only drop me off and pick me up, but she had to return to Chalabre and then come back to Toulouse as well, the cost was about 365€. Okay, not something I would want to do on a daily basis.
A couple of weeks after getting that paperwork, the form telling me about the actual hospital bill arrived. THAT was around 250€! Yes, the surgical procedure was, in fact, less expensive than the taxi service to get me there and back!
JM and I had quite a laugh over that one. My guess is that the hospital bill in L.A. would have been close to $10,000 for the same thing.
And, although I think that the price here was very, very, VERY reasonable, I also think the cost in L.A. would have been seriously overpriced. I do not feel that I got anything like supstandard care in Toulouse. Far from it. Indeed, I think I received as good, if not better care than at any hospital where I've been in the U.S.
So, something is wrong somewhere, and I'm pretty sure I know where that somewhere is.
Ciao for now!
Randy
