Springing Forward

Yep, it's spring! The doomsayers predicted storms for the weekend, but they never materialized and the weather has been pretty darned nice ever since (although some decidedly un-springlike clouds have mysteriously appeared).

On Sunday, we drove to St. Gaudens to meet with British expats Nicola and Paul. Nic and I joined forces to order some Burns dogfood for our various primadonnas. Rather than trying to meet halfway, we thought we'd alternate driving chores, so this time, JM and I went to see their neck of the woods.

Rather than doing autoroute driving, we took the departmentals and nationales between Chalabre and St. Gaudens. If one has time, that's always the most interesting way to travel anywhere. With beautiful sunny skies and temperatures in the upper 60s, it was the perfect day for some tourism with a purpose.

Nic and Paul live in a beautifully restored farmhouse, part of which they've turned into a gite. I'm just waiting for a URL to include a link on my website. They have an amazing view of fields, hills and valleys, all the way to the Pyrenees. They're a lovely couple, and I'm glad that we got to meet them.

We drove through Foix and St. Girons to get there, then returned via the Mas d'Azil and Pamiers. The Mas d'Azil is a beautiful village, but what is astonishing is the grotto one drives through to get there. It really defies description and is one of those places that is definitely worth a detour to see. Like idiots, we forgot to take our camera, but it's so dark in there that I'm not sure we would have gotten decent pictures anyway.

For JM and me, it was fun getting to see it, because we had driven through the grotto in 1999 when we first met Philippe and Bernadette after our visit to Lourdes. We hadn't had time to go back before this weekend though, and we're glad to have had the chance.

Yesterday, we had a bunch of errands to do in Carcassonne, so we headed out early in the morning. Imagine how surprised we were when the beautiful sunshine and warm temperatures of the Possum Kingdom were suddenly replaced with low cloud, drizzle and cold weather! It gave "micro-climate" a whole new meaning and once again made us appreciate our lovely community. We were happy to head back home to sunshine and spring.

Ciao for now!

Randy
